INTRODUCTION |

On January 8, 2016, business tycoon, investor, and philanthropist Azim Premji (Premji), Chairman of the Azim Premji Foundation (APF) and Chairman of Indian IT behemoth Wipro Ltd., was named the most generous Indian by Hurun Research Institute for the third time in a row. This was in recognition of the generous amount he had donated to fund the pioneering work he had been carrying out in the Indian primary education sector. APF, aided by a generous contribution in excess of US$ 4 billion from Premji, had reached out to more than 350,000 schools across 8 states in India. Through the initiative, Premji sought to address and improve the fundamental issues that crippled the Indian primary education sector.
On February 20, 2013, Premji became the first Indian to sign up for the Giving Pledge . Soon after signing the pledge, Premji donated 10% of his stake in Wipro Ltd. , amounting to more than US$ 2.2 billion. Forbes had also honored him with the Outstanding Philanthropist award in 2012 in recognition of his efforts through APF...
